ohmypreciousgirl:

To the anon who is against all consuming love even if it is fictional and on a fantasy show:

After everything Damon has done, for Elena still to connect with him on a level that transcends interpersonal relationships would be to delve into the realm of how unconditional, irrational, and, in a sense, destructive a force love can be. The tragedy of humanity lies in paradoxes - we are always fighting to survive when every moment we move towards death, we find beauty in horror in that we cannot look away from a car crash, and that we love so much beyond ourselves that we destroy ourselves in the process. I don’t want another teen romance about the boy and the girl who have a happy ending. I want reality in a fantastical setting. It’s why we have artistic expression. If you’ve ever read The Things They Carried by Tim O’Brien (I AM RECOMMENDING THAT RIGHT NOW TO ANYONE READING THIS, THE MAN IS A GENIUS) he writes the book as though it were non-fictitious (no idea if that’s a real term) but then reveals to the reader that most of what he’s written isn’t true — and, in essence, stresses the fact that story truth is, sometimes, more honest than “happening truth.”

AND, truth be told, it’s already so much more powerful than Elena’s relationship with Stefan because Elena has already changed who Damon is and has become.” - x

“If Elena were to fall in love with Damon (which, no, she hasn’t yet, in my opinion) that love would beunconditional (and, yes, irrational). Is it logical for her to fall for someone like Damon? No. Should she choose him, at this point, over Stefan if she has the best intentions for her own safety? No. But love is blind, and the passion that lies beneath, when tapped into, is so great that it is nearly a destructive force. That’s why almost all great love stories end in tragedy — because the lovers are doomed, drowned in their own infatuation with one another. And, sure it’s TV, but I, being the hopeless romantic that I am (and no, no sappy shit like candlelit dinners and heart shaped candy, I mean that kind of love where you die for one another), would much rather see this kind of relationship portrayed on screen than the safe, normal one. It’s fantasy for a reason.”- x

These were written around season 2 when it wasn’t very clear what Elena felt for Damon but I guess this should answer that anon.

Besides since we’re talking about unhealthy relationships, what do you, anon, have to say about Elena falling in love with Stefan just because he was the new guy who was interested in her and because he could outlive her unlike how her parents died. Her using him as a surrogate parent protector and becoming heavily dependent on him and not willing to let go of him and grow up? Food for thought maybe?

Does anyone else think it’s weird that Stefan would even need to lean on Caroline for support? I’m thinking Elena won’t want to live the way Stefan thinks she should live and it’s going to cause some conflicts.

findmysoulasigohome:

So I was discussing with someone how we have seen windows to the other sides of Elena’s character like pre-accident Elena and Elena sharing characteristics with Katherine and how now that she is a vampire, she will remember her conversation with Damon the first time he met her and will ask herself who is and she wants out of life and also her personality will become more pronounced so these sides will become more obvious. If so happens, Stefan will not recognize these sides of Elena and may have difficulty accepting them. This person I discussed this with disagreed with me. This post is basically about why I think it’ll happen.

The difference and similarity between Elena and Katherine has always been emphasized. The point that was emphasized on the most in season 1 was that Elena is not Katherine right from the pilot to 1x22. But even so we saw Elena lie to Damon’s face and go behind his back in 1x13 and in season 2 they made it more clear that there was an overlap of their characters with Damon telling Elena “You and Katherine have a lot more in common than just your looks” and later Katherine telling Elena that she has the Petrova fire because she can be manipulative if need be. But Stefan never noticed this because she was never manipulative around him.

Which brings us to the point of whether Stefan will accept her once he finds her to  have these characteristics. For that we also have to understand what Stefan feels for Katherine. The person I was discussing this with said that Stefan too accepted Katherine for who she was but the their conversation in 1864 after the party

I know… we’ve only known each other for a short while and I know I’m in competition for your affections but I’ve never met a woman quite like you. I look at you and I see an angel. I touch your skin and my entire body ignites. I kiss you and I know that I’m falling in love.

(He kisses her)

Stefan: I am in love with you.

Katherine: There’s so much you don’t know about me, Stefan.

Stefan: More to learn and love.

The very fact that Stefan looks her and sees an angel and that he is in love with her before even knowing her and later did not accept her once he got to know she was a vampire proves that he fell in love with a different version of her.

He says to Elena in 1x11

You are not Katherine. You are the opposite of everything that she was.

This very line is very telling that Stefan still doesn’t know much and later he says that he is in love with her and again he has fallen in love with the version he wanted to fall in love with.

In 1x08 Stefan explains the difference between Katherine and Elena

Stefan: Katherine and Elena may look the same on the outside but on the inside they are completely different.

Lexi: So Elena is not a raging Bitch then, huh?

Stefan: No. Elena is … Elena’s warm and she’s…she’s kind, and she’s caring, and she’s selfless, and it’s real… and honestly when I’m around her… I- I completely forget what I am.

Lexi: Oh My god! You’re in love with her.

Stefan: Yeah. Yeah, I am

Now it is true that Elena is all these things but she isn’t only these things. In this post, the person commented on Stefan admitting that he is in love with her at this point. In 1x11 Stefan told Elena that he knew that Elena was nothing like Katherine before he met her when he stayed back after saving her from the car crash and watched and learned everything he could about her( In other words he stalked her)

First of all, after having saved Elena from the car accident, he stuck around for 4 months to “make sure she wasn’t Katherine.” That’s all well and good, but then you risk everything about your existence because you have to know her???????? He claims that he saw she was “selfless, kind, warm…” but my question is HOW!? Most stalkers claim they know their objects of affection inside and out as well, but how do you ever truly know someone without interacting with them? Quite frankly, you never TRULY know someone when you do interact with them, so for Stefan to claim he was then “drawn” to her because she was a good person seems… flimsy. Which brings me to my next point.

By episode 8, Stefan was admitting to Lexi that he was “in love” with Elena. That seems awfully fast, don’t you think? What’s more is that, though this is the first time we’re HEARING this from Stefan, it does not seem as though it’s a new feeling for him. As Damon’s fallen in love with Elena, we’ve seen all of his behaviors change — but for Stefan, this is not the case. From the time we meet him to his “being in love with Elena”, he has remained one-dimensional (not that the character is one dimensional, just in that, from the interval of his interacting with Elena to his “being in love with her” he has not changed - he’s static. the only time he underwent some character development was when he was on human blood). Now, this is indicative of a few things. Either a) he’s not genuinely in love with her or b) he was already in love with her before he met her, andbefore we were introduced to the story. And when I say in love, I mean “in love.”

I say this because how can you be in love with someone with which you’ve never connected? You can’t. Now, this is different from “love at first sight” (not saying this exists or doesn’t exist) because, at least in my eyes (no pun intended), love at first sight is indicative of two people falling in love when their eyes first meet. In other words, when they share their first gaze. Had Stefan been following Elena for 4 months without her knowing, she never would have shared this eye contact with him until the day they met (had he not compelled her, but that’s another story…! and again, I’m not saying he did).
So, I reiterate — how could he be in love with her?
Simple.
He’s in love with the idea of her.

Elena to Stefan is everything he believed Katherine to be before she revealed herself to be vampire and compelled him to not tell anyone and go on sleeping with her despite her sleeping with Damon. In her he saw the “angel” he saw in Katherine again and he fell in love with that version of Katherine again. The very fact that Stefan describes it as “real” to describe his feelings for Elena is telling that the part that really made him believe that his love for Katherine wasn’t real because she compelled him and this time he thinks he isn’t under any illusion.

It wasn’t real,Damon. Our love for Katherine. She compelled us. We didn’t have a choice.Took me years to sort that out,to trully understand what she did to us.

As Katherine later says in 2x04 she might have compelled him to do other things but she did not compel his love. But by compelling him she did alter the reality for him so while Stefan fell in love with Katherine without compulsion, Stefan didn’t fall in love with the real Katherine.

This however does not mean that Stefan ever got over Katherine because he still holds onto her picture. He has not been able to let go of the version of Katherine he fell in love with and when he saw Elena and found that she didn’t have characteristics that Katherine had that he didn’t like, he transferred all his feelings for the “angel” he believed Katherine to be onto Elena. So now if he finds that Elena shares any of those characteristics with Katherine, he will not be as accepting as he was of her because she ceases to fit that idea of her.

Which brings us to what Elena wants finally out of life. As Damon said in the flashback, she wants a love that consumes her, passion, adventure and a little bit of danger. Basically she wants to live life to the fullest but for that she has to let go of her fears and stop settling for what is safe. Truth be told we have only seen only glimpses of who Elena is deep down because the accident shook her wants from life for a little while but it was only for a while. Damon has always seen this fire in her(“She’s got spunk”) but Stefan has let it go past him unnoticed not knowing it is the one thing that has remained with her despite the accident and it has been part of her core. So when Elena is faced with the question about who she was then and if she is the same person now and this realization is shown to Stefan he will not feel as connected to her as he used to be.

The person I was discussing this with raised a very valid point that the premise of the show is the triangle so there is no way Stefan would stop loving Elena. Taking that into consideration, I don’t think Stefan will reject her and stop loving her once faced with these changes but he will rather hold onto that image of who Elena used to be with him and pretend like it doesn’t bother him and nothing has changed or he will unconsciously distance himself from Elena while at the same time not letting go of his feelings for her because he believes her to be his “soulmate”. In either scenario, it will be finally Elena who will realize that Stefan was in love with another version of her and will let go of him completely at the end of the series.

Is it just me or does Julie (and the writers) seem to spend an awful amount of time evolving Damon’s character when compared to Stefan?

"This is a reminder that Damon is a character that started in a very dark place, but with a lot of love and emotion brewing under him. All of our characters, including his own brother, had to witness his evolution as a person and he has done some really extraordinarily shitty things, but he has also done them in the name of love, pain, abandonment, self-preservation, survival and family. He’s going to keep evolving and Elena’s feelings for him are going to continue to evolve."

tvd-delena-love:

allofthisdevotion:

I really love Damon Salvatore. SO MUCH honestly. I love his story, the way he chooses to show his emotions, the way he shows people he loves them… Everything he does appeals to me. But most of all, I commend him for being able to ALL the crap people give him and all the heartbreak that he has gone through and channeling it positively, something most of the other characters on this show have a hard time doing. Sure, Damon is inherently impulsive, but I think that’s what sets him apart from other TVD characters. He doesn’t give up. He doesn’t give in. And if someone hurts him, he picks himself up and tries to be stronger again.

Another thing I love about him. Damon is capable of loving with EVERY SINGLE BONE in his body. He loves so much that it consumes him. For example, he loved Katherine so much that he let it control every aspect of his life. Eventually he realized that all she did was use him, and he found a way to move on. Yes, despite moving on, Damon still cares for her, enough to want her to be alive. Damon doesn’t just ‘move on’ from people he used to love/care about. He’s still willing to protect them, even after a fallout, (unless they threaten him or someone he loves).

Damon’s ability to not let his anger and heartbreak destroy him completely is really compelling and inspiring. He doesn’t let anyone feel his guilt. He doesn’t WANT peoples’ pity. He wants them to know that he can find his way on his own (even though he is genuinely surprised and almost happy when he realizes someone cares about him enough to help him out).

yeah but she only took a little and used all of it on a patient

she took a little? i think she took a lot.

anyways, i think everybody assumes that also cause he’s the only vampire she could possibly take blood from.

i mean who else?

Why does everybody assume it’s Damon’s blood that turned Elena?

because meredith took his blood in one of the episodes.
